A
ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder):
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with daily functioning. Individuals with ADHD may struggle to focus, stay organized, and control impulses, often leading to difficulties in school, work, and relationships. Symptoms typically appear in childhood and can continue into adulthood. ADHD is diagnosed through clinical evaluation, and treatment usually includes behavioral therapy, medication, and support strategies to help manage symptoms and improve overall functioning and quality of life.
Anxiety Disorders:
Anxiety disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by excessive, persistent worry and fear that interfere with daily life. Common types include generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and specific phobias. Symptoms can be physical, like rapid heartbeat, sweating, and trembling, and psychological, such as restlessness and difficulty concentrating. These disorders can develop due to genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Treatment typically involves psychotherapy, medication, and lifestyle changes, helping individuals manage symptoms, reduce stress, and improve their overall well-being and functioning.
Art Therapy:
Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses creative processes like drawing, painting, and sculpting to help individuals express emotions and explore their inner experiences. It provides a nonverbal way to communicate feelings that may be difficult to articulate, promoting self-awareness, healing, and emotional release. Used with people of all ages, art therapy supports mental health by reducing stress, improving coping skills, and enhancing personal growth. Often combined with traditional therapy, it is effective for trauma, anxiety, depression, and other psychological challenges.
Antidepressants
Antidepressants are medications prescribed to treat depression and other mental health conditions such as anxiety disorders, PTSD, and OCD. They work by balancing chemicals in the brain, primarily serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine, to improve mood and emotional regulation. Common types include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), and tricyclic antidepressants. While effective for many, antidepressants may take several weeks to show results and can have side effects. They are often used alongside psychotherapy for optimal outcomes.
Anorexia nervosa:
Anorexia nervosa is a serious eating disorder marked by extreme food restriction, intense fear of gaining weight, and a distorted body image. Individuals with anorexia often view themselves as overweight, even when dangerously underweight. This condition leads to severe physical and emotional consequences, including malnutrition, hormonal imbalances, heart issues, and weakened bones. Common behaviors include skipping meals, excessive exercising, and an obsession with body shape and weight. Anorexia can affect anyone, though it commonly begins in adolescence. Early intervention through psychological therapy, nutritional support, and medical care is crucial for recovery and preventing long-term health complications or life-threatening outcomes.
Adjustment Disorder:
Emotional and/or behavioral problems following a specific stressor, which significantly interfere with social, work, or school functioning - an unusually strong or long-lasting reaction to an upsetting event. The triggering event might be that of emotional upset, change, or disappointment. A child or adult with the disorder will have a hard time coping with his/her emotions and may become depressed or anxious, exhibit hostility, show defiance, aggression, and a general state of being unsettled.
Antisocial Personality Disorder:
Antisocial Personality Disorder is a chronic mental condition marked by a disregard for right and wrong and the rights of others. Individuals may manipulate, deceive, or harm others without remorse. They often display impulsive, aggressive behavior, violate laws, and struggle with substance abuse. Their actions typically lead to conflict, legal issues, and difficulty maintaining work, school, or family responsibilities. Despite their behavior, they rarely feel guilt, making relationships and societal integration challenging.
Avoidant Personality Disorder:
Avoidant Personality Disorder is marked by extreme sensitivity to criticism, low self-esteem, and intense fear of rejection. Individuals often avoid social or work interactions, appear shy or tense, and isolate themselves despite desiring connection. Their fear of embarrassment or ridicule limits relationships and functioning, leading to loneliness and a lack of support. They may idealize relationships but struggle to form real ones due to their deep insecurities.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD):
ASD is a developmental disorder affecting communication, social interaction, and behavior. It encompasses a range of conditions from mild to severe, characterized by challenges in understanding social cues, repetitive behaviors, and restricted interests. Symptoms usually appear in early childhood. While there is no cure, early intervention with therapies like speech, occupational, and behavioral therapy can improve skills and independence. ASD varies widely between individuals, requiring personalized support to enhance quality of life.
Agoraphobia
Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder characterized by intense fear of situations where escape might be difficult or help unavailable, such as open spaces, crowds, or public transportation. People with agoraphobia often avoid these situations, which can severely limit daily activities and social interaction. It commonly develops after panic attacks or other anxiety disorders. Treatment includes cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), exposure therapy, and medication to reduce symptoms and improve functioning.
Affective Disorders
Affective disorders are a group of mental health conditions primarily involving mood disturbances, including depression and bipolar disorder. These disorders cause significant changes in mood, energy, and activity levels, impacting daily life. Symptoms can range from persistent sadness or irritability to extreme mood swings between mania and depression. Treatment typically involves medication, psychotherapy, and lifestyle adjustments aimed at stabilizing mood and enhancing coping skills.
Addiction
Addiction is a chronic condition characterized by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli despite harmful consequences. It commonly involves substances like alcohol, drugs, or behaviors such as gambling. Addiction affects brain function and behavior, leading to physical dependence, tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms. Treatment includes detoxification, behavioral therapy, support groups, and sometimes medication to manage cravings and promote recovery. Addressing underlying psychological issues is crucial for long-term success.
Acute Stress Disorder
Assertiveness training teaches individuals to express their thoughts, feelings, and needs confidently and respectfully without aggression or passivity. It helps improve communication skills, self-esteem, and boundary-setting, reducing anxiety and interpersonal conflicts. Often used in therapy and group settings, assertiveness training empowers people to advocate for themselves effectively in personal and professional relationships.
Altruism (as a defense mechanism)
Altruism is a mature defense mechanism where individuals cope with stress or internal conflicts by helping others. Instead of focusing on their own distress, they derive satisfaction and emotional relief by providing support, care, or acts of kindness. This mechanism promotes positive social behavior and can improve mental well-being, fostering feelings of purpose and connection.
Anger Management
Anger management refers to techniques and therapies aimed at helping individuals control and express anger constructively. Uncontrolled anger can lead to interpersonal problems, health issues, and emotional distress. Anger management includes strategies like relaxation, cognitive restructuring, communication skills, and problem-solving to reduce impulsivity and improve emotional regulation, enhancing personal and social functioning.

Bipolar Disorder:
Burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress, often related to work or caregiving. It leads to feelings of overwhelm, reduced motivation, and decreased performance. Symptoms include chronic fatigue, cynicism, and detachment from responsibilities. If not addressed, burnout can impact overall well-being and productivity, making it essential to recognize early signs and adopt coping strategies like rest, support, and workload management.
Burnout:
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). During manic phases, individuals may feel euphoric, energetic, or unusually irritable, often engaging in risky behavior. Depressive episodes involve feelings of sadness, hopelessness, fatigue, and loss of interest in daily activities. These mood shifts can affect sleep, energy, behavior, and the ability to think clearly. Bipolar disorder typically develops in late adolescence or early adulthood and requires long-term management through medication, therapy, and lifestyle changes to help stabilize mood and improve overall quality of life.
Binge Eating Disorder:
Binge eating disorder is characterized by compulsive overeating, where individuals consume large amounts of food while feeling out of control. It often begins in late adolescence or early adulthood, frequently after dieting. Episodes typically last around two hours, with some bingeing throughout the day. People binge eat even when not hungry, eating quickly without awareness. Key features include frequent, uncontrollable binges and significant distress afterward. Unlike bulimia, there are no regular compensatory behaviors like vomiting or excessive exercise.
Body Dysmorphic Disorder:
Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a mental health condition where individuals are preoccupied with perceived flaws in their appearance, often minor or invisible to others. This intense focus leads to feelings of being “ugly,” social withdrawal, and, in some cases, repeated cosmetic procedures. Common concerns include skin imperfections, hair issues, facial features, or body weight. Despite appearing physically normal, those with BDD experience significant emotional distress and impaired daily functioning due to their distorted self-image.
Borderline Personality Disorder:
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a mental health condition marked by unstable emotions, self-image, relationships, and impulsive behavior. Individuals often fear abandonment, yet may act in ways that push others away. They experience intense mood swings, inappropriate anger, and shifting goals or identities that feel confusing. BPD typically begins in early adulthood, often more severe in youth, but may improve with age. It significantly affects daily functioning and emotional stability, making relationships and self-understanding particularly challenging.
Bulimia Nervosa:
Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder marked by recurring episodes of binge eating followed by efforts to prevent weight gain, such as vomiting, fasting, or over-exercising. It affects individuals of all ages and genders. Those struggling often feel trapped between the desire to stay thin and the urge to binge, despite knowing it will lead to guilt and shame. During a binge, one may consume 3,000 to 5,000 calories in a short time, feeling powerless to stop.
Brief Psychotic Disorder:
Brief Psychotic Disorder is a sudden, short-term mental illness characterized by symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech, and behavior. These symptoms last for at least one day but less than one month, with a full return to normal functioning afterward. It often occurs in response to extreme stress or trauma. Early treatment with medication and therapy can help manage symptoms and prevent recurrence. It differs from other psychotic disorders due to its brief duration and complete recovery.
Brain Fog:
Brain fog refers to a temporary state of mental confusion, lack of focus, and reduced cognitive clarity. It can cause difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, and slowed thinking, often making everyday tasks challenging. Brain fog is not a medical condition itself but a symptom linked to stress, fatigue, poor sleep, medication side effects, or medical issues like depression and chronic illness. Managing brain fog involves improving sleep, reducing stress, eating a balanced diet, and addressing underlying health problems to restore mental clarity.
Behavioral Activation:
Behavioral Activation is a therapeutic approach used mainly to treat depression. It focuses on encouraging individuals to engage in positive and meaningful activities to counteract inactivity and withdrawal caused by depressive symptoms. By increasing engagement in rewarding behaviors, it aims to improve mood, reduce negative thoughts, and boost motivation. This therapy helps break the cycle of avoidance and inactivity, promoting a sense of accomplishment and pleasure. It is often used as part of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and has proven effective in reducing depressive symptoms.
Biofeedback:
Biofeedback is a therapeutic technique that teaches individuals to control physiological functions, such as heart rate, muscle tension, and breathing, using real-time feedback from monitoring devices. It helps people become more aware of their body’s responses and develop skills to regulate stress and anxiety. Commonly used for managing chronic pain, hypertension, anxiety, and headaches, biofeedback empowers patients to improve physical and mental health without medication. It’s a non-invasive, drug-free approach that complements other therapies by enhancing relaxation and self-regulation.
Boundary Setting:
Boundary setting is the practice of establishing clear limits to protect one’s emotional, mental, and physical well-being in relationships and environments. Healthy boundaries help maintain respect, prevent burnout, and improve communication by defining what is acceptable and what is not. They can be physical, emotional, or digital, and are essential in both personal and professional contexts. Learning to set and maintain boundaries supports self-care, reduces stress, and fosters healthier interactions, preventing exploitation or resentment.
Behavioral Activation Therapy:
Behavioral Activation Therapy is a structured, evidence-based treatment for depression focused on increasing engagement in meaningful activities. It helps individuals identify and overcome patterns of avoidance and inactivity that maintain depressive symptoms. By scheduling enjoyable or purposeful tasks it aims to improve mood and motivation. This therapy is straightforward and effective, often used alone or alongside other treatments like cognitive therapy or medication. It empowers individuals to regain control over their lives, reducing depression’s impact by fostering positive behavioral changes.

C
CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy):
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a structured, time-limited form of psychotherapy that helps individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviours. It is based on the concept that our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are interconnected, and that altering unhelpful thoughts can improve emotional well-being and actions. CBT is effective for a wide range of mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, stress, and eating disorders. It focuses on practical strategies, such as challenging irrational beliefs and developing coping skills, to empower individuals to manage current problems and prevent future ones. Sessions are goal-oriented and typically short-term.
Child Psychology:
Child psychology is a branch of psychology that focuses on the mental, emotional, and behavioral development of children from birth through adolescence. It studies how children grow, learn, think, feel, and interact with others, taking into account biological, psychological, and environmental factors. Child psychologists observe and assess developmental milestones, social skills, emotional regulation, and cognitive abilities. They also help address challenges such as learning difficulties, behavioral problems, trauma, and mental health issues. Understanding child psychology is essential for parents, educators, and caregivers to support healthy development and foster a child’s overall well-being, resilience, and academic and social success.
Counselling:
Counselling is a professional, therapeutic process that helps individuals explore and resolve emotional, psychological, or behavioral issues affecting their well-being. From a medical and mental health perspective, it involves structured conversations with a trained counsellor or therapist who provides support, guidance, and evidence-based techniques. Counselling can address a range of issues, including anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, grief, and relationship problems. It aims to improve mental health, enhance coping strategies, and promote personal growth. Counselling may be short-term or long-term, depending on individual needs, and is often integrated with other treatments in a comprehensive mental health care plan.
Crisis Intervention:
Crisis intervention is an immediate, short-term psychological support aimed at individuals experiencing intense emotional distress or a mental health emergency. From a mental health and medical perspective, it addresses situations such as suicidal thoughts, panic attacks, trauma, or sudden loss, helping stabilize the person and prevent harm. The goal is to reduce acute symptoms, ensure safety, and restore a sense of control. Trained professionals assess risk, offer emotional support, and connect individuals to ongoing care if needed. Crisis intervention plays a critical role in preventing long-term psychological damage and supporting recovery during periods of overwhelming stress or instability.
Conduct Disorder:
Crisis intervention is an immediate, short-term psychological support provided to individuals facing a mental health emergency or overwhelming emotional distress. From a mental health and medical perspective, it addresses urgent situations such as suicidal ideation, panic attacks, trauma, or sudden loss. The primary goals are to ensure safety, reduce emotional intensity, stabilize the individual, and prevent long-term psychological harm. Trained professionals assess risk, offer compassionate support, and help the person regain a sense of control. Crisis intervention also serves as a bridge to ongoing mental health care, ensuring individuals receive the appropriate follow-up support for recovery and long-term well-being.
Coping skills:
Coping skills are strategies and techniques that individuals use to manage stress, emotional pain, and difficult situations. These skills help people navigate life’s challenges in healthy, constructive ways. Coping skills can be emotional (e.g., journaling, seeking support), cognitive (e.g., reframing negative thoughts), or behavioral (e.g., exercise, problem-solving). They are essential for maintaining mental well-being and preventing burnout, anxiety, or depression. Coping skills can be learned and improved over time and are often taught in therapy to help individuals respond to triggers, regulate emotions, and build resilience.
Conversion Disorder:
Conversion disorder, also known as Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder, is a mental health condition where a person experiences neurological symptoms, such as paralysis, numbness, seizures, or blindness, without a clear medical cause. These symptoms are real and not intentionally produced, but they often arise in response to psychological stress or trauma. The condition reflects the body’s way of expressing emotional conflict or distress through physical symptoms. Diagnosis involves ruling out neurological diseases, and treatment typically includes psychotherapy, stress management, and physical rehabilitation to improve functioning and address underlying emotional issues.
Cognitive Distortions:
Cognitive distortions are irrational or biased ways of thinking that negatively influence how a person perceives themselves, others, and the world. These automatic thoughts often reinforce negative emotions and behaviors, contributing to mental health issues like depression and anxiety. Common types include all-or-nothing thinking, overgeneralization, catastrophizing, and personalization. For example, someone might believe, “If I fail at this, I’m a total failure.” Recognizing and challenging these distortions is a key component of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), helping individuals develop healthier and more balanced thinking patterns.
Catatonia:
Catatonia is a complex neuropsychiatric syndrome characterized by a range of motor, behavioral, and mood disturbances. Individuals with catatonia may experience symptoms such as immobility, mutism, stupor, resistance to movement, repetitive movements (stereotypy), or bizarre postures. Though it is most commonly associated with schizophrenia, catatonia can also occur in mood disorders, autism spectrum disorder, or as a result of medical or neurological conditions. It can be life-threatening if left untreated, but it often responds well to interventions such as benzodiazepines or electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) under professional care.
Clang Associations:
Clang associations are a speech pattern where a person’s words are chosen based on their sound rather than meaning, often rhyming or alliterating nonsensically. For example, someone might say, “The train brain rained on the plain.” This symptom is most commonly seen in individuals with certain mental health disorders, particularly schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, during manic episodes. Clang associations can interfere with communication, making it difficult for others to follow the speaker’s thoughts. It reflects disorganized thinking and is considered a type of formal thought disorder in psychiatric diagnosis.
Compulsive Behavior:
Compulsive behavior refers to repetitive actions that a person feels driven to perform, often to reduce anxiety or distress. These behaviors are typically rigid and ritualistic, and while they may provide temporary relief, they are usually not connected in a realistic way to the problem they intend to prevent or solve. Common in conditions like Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), compulsive behaviors can include excessive hand-washing, checking, counting, or hoarding. Over time, these actions can interfere with daily functioning and quality of life, creating a cycle that is difficult to break without professional help.
Chronic Stress:
Chronic stress is a prolonged and constant feeling of stress that can negatively impact physical and mental health. Unlike acute stress, which is short-term and often resolved quickly, chronic stress persists over an extended period, often due to ongoing pressures such as work demands, financial worries, or relationship issues. It can lead to symptoms like fatigue, anxiety, insomnia, irritability, and weakened immunity. Over time, chronic stress increases the risk of serious health conditions, including depression, heart disease, and digestive problems. Managing chronic stress typically involves lifestyle changes, therapy, relaxation techniques, and support systems.
Codependency:
Codependency is a behavioral condition in relationships where one person enables another’s addiction, poor mental health, immaturity, or irresponsibility. Often rooted in low self-esteem, codependent individuals prioritize others’ needs over their own, seeking approval and validation to feel worthy. This leads to unhealthy patterns like people-pleasing, difficulty setting boundaries, and emotional suppression. Common in relationships involving substance abuse or trauma, codependency can prevent personal growth and fuel emotional exhaustion. Recovery involves self-awareness, setting healthy boundaries, and building self-worth—often with the help of therapy or support groups like Codependents Anonymous (CoDA).
Confabulation:
Confabulation is a memory disturbance where a person creates false memories without the intent to deceive. These fabricated memories can range from minor inaccuracies to entirely imagined events, and the person believes them to be true. It commonly occurs in individuals with brain damage, especially those with conditions affecting the frontal lobe, such as Korsakoff’s syndrome, traumatic brain injury, or dementia. Unlike lying, confabulation is unconscious and not purposeful. It reflects the brain's attempt to fill in memory gaps and maintain a coherent sense of reality, often without awareness of the distortion.
Co-occurring Disorders:
Co-occurring disorders, also known as dual diagnosis, refer to the presence of both a mental health disorder and a substance use disorder in the same individual. These conditions often interact in complex ways, making diagnosis and treatment more challenging. For example, a person may use alcohol or drugs to cope with depression or anxiety, which in turn worsens their mental health. Effective treatment addresses both issues simultaneously, often through integrated care involving therapy, medication, and support systems, to improve overall functioning and long-term recovery outcomes.

D
Depression:
Depression is a common but serious mental health disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities. It affects how a person thinks, feels, and functions physically and emotionally. Symptoms may include fatigue, changes in appetite or sleep, difficulty concentrating, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, and in severe cases, thoughts of self-harm or suicide. Depression can be triggered by life events, medical conditions, or chemical imbalances in the brain. It is treatable through therapy, medication, or a combination of both, and early intervention significantly improves recovery and quality of life.
Dyslexia:
Dyslexia is a specific learning disorder that primarily affects reading, writing, and spelling abilities, despite normal intelligence and adequate educational opportunities. It is a neurological condition that impacts how the brain processes language, making it difficult to recognize and decode words accurately and fluently. Individuals with dyslexia may also struggle with phonological awareness, memory, and sequencing. Symptoms often appear in early childhood and can vary in severity. With early diagnosis, specialized teaching strategies, and supportive learning environments, individuals with dyslexia can manage challenges effectively and achieve academic and personal success. It is not related to lack of intelligence or effort.
Developmental Delays:
Developmental delays refer to when a child does not reach milestones in physical, cognitive, communication, social, or emotional skills at the expected age. These delays can affect one or multiple areas of development and may be caused by genetic factors, medical conditions, environmental influences, or unknown reasons. Early signs include delayed speech, motor skills, or social interaction difficulties. Identifying developmental delays early through screening and assessment is crucial for timely intervention. With appropriate therapies and support, many children can improve their skills and achieve better outcomes in learning, behavior, and daily functioning. Early intervention greatly enhances long-term development.
Dissociative Disorders:
Dissociative disorders are mental health conditions characterized by a disconnection between thoughts, identity, consciousness, and memory. They often develop as a response to trauma or severe stress, serving as a coping mechanism to detach from reality. Common types include dissociative amnesia, dissociative identity disorder (formerly multiple personality disorder), and depersonalization/derealization disorder. Symptoms may involve memory loss, feeling detached from oneself or surroundings, and identity confusion. These disorders can disrupt daily functioning and cause distress. Treatment typically involves psychotherapy, focusing on trauma processing and integration of dissociated parts to restore a cohesive sense of self and improve emotional regulation.
Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder:
Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD) is a childhood mental health condition characterized by severe, chronic irritability and frequent temper outbursts that are disproportionate to the situation. These outbursts occur multiple times a week and are present for at least 12 months, causing significant impairment in social, educational, or family functioning. Children with DMDD display persistent angry or irritable moods between outbursts. The disorder typically begins before age 10 and helps differentiate severe irritability from bipolar disorder. Treatment often includes therapy, parent training, and sometimes medication to help manage mood and behavior. Early intervention supports better long-term outcomes.
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD):
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), or depression, is a common mental health condition characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest or pleasure in activities. It affects mood, thoughts, and physical health, causing symptoms like fatigue, changes in appetite or sleep, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of worthlessness. Depression can interfere significantly with daily life and functioning. It may be triggered by genetic, biological, environmental, or psychological factors. Effective treatment often involves a combination of psychotherapy, medication, and lifestyle changes. Early diagnosis and intervention improve recovery and quality of life for those affected.
Dissociation:
Dissociation is a mental process where a person disconnects from their thoughts, feelings, memories, or sense of identity. It often occurs as a defense mechanism in response to trauma or extreme stress, helping the individual detach from painful experiences. Symptoms range from mild daydreaming to severe detachment, such as dissociative identity disorder. Dissociation can disrupt daily functioning and emotional regulation, often requiring therapy to help individuals reconnect with their reality and integrate fragmented experiences.
Delusion:
A delusion is a firmly held false belief that is resistant to reason or contrary evidence, commonly seen in psychotic disorders like schizophrenia. These beliefs are not based in reality and can involve paranoia, grandiosity, or bizarre ideas. Delusions significantly affect a person’s thoughts and behavior, often causing distress or impaired functioning. Treatment typically involves medication and psychotherapy aimed at managing symptoms and improving insight into reality.
Dysphoria:
Dysphoria is a state of intense unease, dissatisfaction, or generalized unhappiness. It is commonly associated with mood disorders, such as depression or anxiety, and can manifest as irritability, restlessness, or discomfort. Dysphoria may also occur in conditions like gender dysphoria, where a person experiences distress related to their gender identity. Addressing dysphoria often involves therapy, medication, and supportive interventions to improve emotional well-being.
Dual Diagnosis:
Dual diagnosis refers to the co-occurrence of a mental health disorder and a substance use disorder in the same individual. This combination complicates treatment as both conditions interact and exacerbate each other. Effective care requires integrated treatment addressing both disorders simultaneously through therapy, medication, and support services. Recognizing dual diagnosis is crucial for improving recovery outcomes and reducing relapse risks.
Dementia:
Dementia is a chronic, progressive decline in cognitive function affecting memory, thinking, language, and judgment. It interferes with daily activities and independence, commonly caused by Alzheimer’s disease or other brain disorders. Symptoms include memory loss, confusion, personality changes, and difficulty with problem-solving. While there is no cure, treatments focus on managing symptoms and improving quality of life through medication, therapy, and supportive care.
Depersonalization:
Depersonalization is a dissociative symptom where individuals feel detached or estranged from their own body, thoughts, or feelings, as if observing themselves from outside. It can be triggered by stress, trauma, or anxiety disorders and causes significant distress or impairment. Often, temporary, persistent depersonalization may require therapy to help individuals reconnect with their sense of self and reduce anxiety.
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM):
The DSM is a comprehensive classification manual published by the American Psychiatric Association, used by clinicians to diagnose mental disorders. It provides standardized criteria and descriptions for mental health conditions, facilitating consistency in diagnosis, research, and treatment planning. The DSM is regularly updated to reflect new scientific knowledge and evolving understanding of mental health, making it an essential tool in psychiatry and psychology worldwide.
Distress Tolerance:
Distress tolerance refers to an individual’s ability to withstand and manage emotional pain or difficult situations without resorting to harmful behaviors. It is a crucial skill in therapies like Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and helps people cope with stress, anxiety, and crises more effectively. Improving distress tolerance involves learning healthy coping mechanisms to endure discomfort while maintaining control and emotional regulation.
Dream Analysis:
Dream analysis is a psychotherapeutic technique that interprets the content of dreams to uncover unconscious thoughts, desires, and emotions. Rooted in psychoanalytic theory, it helps individuals gain insight into their internal conflicts and psychological issues. By exploring dream symbols and themes, therapists assist patients in understanding hidden meanings and integrating unconscious material into conscious awareness for emotional healing and personal growth.

E
Emotional Regulation:
Emotional regulation is the ability to manage and respond to one’s emotions in a healthy and adaptive way. It involves recognizing, understanding, and controlling emotional reactions to situations, helping maintain emotional balance. Effective emotional regulation helps reduce stress, improve decision-making, and build better relationships. It includes strategies like mindfulness, cognitive reframing, and relaxation techniques. Poor emotional regulation can lead to impulsivity, mood swings, and difficulties in social or professional settings, highlighting its importance for mental well-being and overall functioning.
Expressive Therapies:
Expressive therapies are therapeutic approaches that use creative arts, such as art, music, dance, drama, and writing, to help individuals explore and express emotions, improve mental health, and promote healing. These therapies provide a non-verbal outlet for feelings that may be difficult to communicate through words alone. Used in mental health, medical, and rehabilitation settings, expressive therapies support self-awareness, reduce stress, and enhance emotional and psychological well-being by encouraging creativity and personal expression.
Exposure Therapy:
Exposure therapy is a psychological treatment used primarily for anxiety disorders, including phobias, PTSD, and OCD. It involves gradually and systematically exposing individuals to feared objects, situations, or memories in a controlled environment to reduce fear and avoidance. This repeated exposure helps the brain reframe responses, decreasing anxiety over time. Exposure therapy is evidence-based and usually conducted by trained therapists, often combined with cognitive-behavioral techniques to enhance coping skills and long-term recovery.
Empathy:
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. It plays a crucial role in mental health care by fostering connection, trust, and effective communication between clients and therapists. Empathy allows professionals to provide compassionate support and helps individuals feel heard and validated. Developing empathy enhances social relationships and emotional intelligence, which are important for both personal well-being and therapeutic progress.
Existential Therapy:
Existential therapy focuses on exploring fundamental human concerns such as meaning, freedom, responsibility, and mortality. It helps individuals confront anxieties related to existence and find purpose in life despite uncertainty. This therapy encourages self-awareness, authentic living, and acceptance of life’s challenges. Often applied in cases of depression, anxiety, and grief, existential therapy supports clients in creating meaningful values and embracing personal freedom.
Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT):
Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is a medical treatment for severe mental health conditions, such as major depression, bipolar disorder, and catatonia, particularly when other treatments fail. It involves passing controlled electric currents through the brain under anesthesia to induce a brief seizure, which can rapidly improve symptoms. Though once controversial, modern ECT is safe and effective when administered by trained professionals. Side effects may include temporary memory loss, but ECT can be life-saving in treatment-resistant cases.
Eating Disorders:
Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions characterized by abnormal eating behaviors and unhealthy relationships with food, body image, and weight. Common types include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder. These disorders often involve distorted self-perception, compulsive behaviors, and significant physical and psychological health risks. Treatment typically includes therapy, nutritional counseling, and medical monitoring, focusing on restoring healthy eating habits and addressing underlying emotional issues.
Early Intervention:
Early intervention in mental health refers to the timely identification and treatment of psychological issues at the onset of symptoms, often in childhood or adolescence. Prompt support can prevent progression, reduce severity, and improve long-term outcomes. Early intervention strategies include screening, counseling, family education, and targeted therapies. This approach is vital for disorders like autism, psychosis, and mood disorders, helping individuals develop coping skills and access resources during critical developmental periods.
Emotional Intelligence:
Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage one’s own emotions and the emotions of others. It includes skills like empathy, emotional regulation, and effective communication. High emotional intelligence contributes to better mental health, stronger relationships, and improved problem-solving abilities. Developing emotional intelligence is often a goal in therapy and personal growth, as it helps individuals navigate social interactions and cope with stress more effectively.
Emotional Resilience:
Emotional resilience is the capacity to adapt to stressful or adverse situations, recovering quickly from setbacks or trauma. It enables individuals to maintain mental well-being despite challenges by managing emotions, staying optimistic, and using coping strategies. Resilience can be strengthened through supportive relationships, mindfulness, and problem-solving skills. High emotional resilience reduces the risk of mental health disorders and supports overall psychological strength.
Enmeshment:
Enmeshment refers to a dysfunctional family dynamic where personal boundaries are blurred, and individuals are overly involved in each other’s lives. This can lead to loss of autonomy, identity confusion, and emotional dependency. In mental health, enmeshment can contribute to anxiety, low self-esteem, and difficulty in establishing healthy relationships. Therapy often focuses on setting boundaries and fostering individual growth to improve family functioning and personal well-being.
Ego Defense Mechanisms:
Ego defense mechanisms are unconscious psychological strategies the mind uses to protect itself from anxiety, conflict, or uncomfortable feelings. Common mechanisms include repression, denial, projection, and rationalization. While they help manage stress temporarily, overreliance on defenses can interfere with emotional awareness and healthy coping. Psychotherapy often helps individuals recognize and adapt these mechanisms to improve mental health and self-understanding.
Externalizing Behaviors
Externalizing behaviors are outward-directed behaviors such as aggression, defiance, hyperactivity, and conduct problems. These behaviors are often seen in children and adolescents struggling with emotional or behavioral disorders. Externalizing can result from environmental stress, trauma, or developmental issues. Treatment typically involves behavioral interventions, therapy, and family support to improve self-control, social skills, and emotional regulation.

Hallucinations are false sensory perceptions where an individual sees, hears, smells, tastes, or feels things that are not actually present. They are often associated with psychiatric conditions like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or severe depression, but may also occur due to substance use or neurological conditions. Hallucinations can be distressing and significantly impact daily functioning. Treatment usually involves medication, therapy, and addressing the underlying cause.
Hopelessness
Hopelessness is a mental state marked by feelings of despair, pessimism, and the belief that one’s circumstances will not improve. It is a common symptom of depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders, and is also a significant risk factor for suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Recognizing and addressing hopelessness through therapy, support systems, and interventions is crucial in restoring optimism, resilience, and mental well-being.
Hyperactivity
Hyperactivity refers to excessive levels of movement, restlessness, and impulsivity that are disproportionate to a situation. It is a hallmark symptom of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), but may also occur in manic episodes or certain neurological conditions. Individuals with hyperactivity may struggle with concentration, social interactions, and daily tasks. Behavioral therapy, medication, structured routines, and supportive environments often help in managing hyperactivity and improving quality of life.
Hypomania
Hypomania is a mental state characterized by elevated mood, increased energy, and heightened productivity, but without the severe impairment seen in full mania. People experiencing hypomania may feel unusually optimistic, energetic, or creative, but may also engage in risky behavior or poor decision-making. It is commonly associated with bipolar II disorder. While hypomania may appear positive, untreated episodes can progress to mania or depression, requiring medical and therapeutic care.
Hospitalization (Psychiatric)
Psychiatric hospitalization is an intensive form of mental health care where individuals are admitted to a hospital or clinic during crises such as severe depression, suicidal intent, psychosis, or dangerous behavior. The goal is to provide safety, stabilization, and immediate treatment through therapy, medication, and structured support. Hospitalization can be voluntary or involuntary, depending on the severity of the condition. After stabilization, patients typically continue with outpatient or community-based care.
Helpline (Mental Health)
A mental health helpline provides immediate, confidential, and accessible support to individuals experiencing distress, crisis, or mental health challenges. These services are usually available via phone, text, or online chat, often operating 24/7. Helplines are staffed by trained counselors, volunteers, or professionals who listen, provide guidance, and connect callers to resources such as therapy, crisis intervention, or emergency services. They play a crucial role in suicide prevention and early intervention.
Humanistic Therapy
Humanistic therapy is a client-centered approach that emphasizes personal growth, self-awareness, and the individual’s innate potential to heal. Rooted in the philosophies of Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow, it encourages empathy, unconditional positive regard, and active listening from the therapist. Rather than focusing on pathology, humanistic therapy helps clients explore meaning, values, and self-acceptance. It is especially effective for those seeking personal development, relationship improvements, or emotional well-being.
Habit Reversal Therapy (HRT)
Habit Reversal Therapy is a cognitive-behavioral technique designed to help individuals manage repetitive, unwanted behaviors such as tics, hair-pulling (trichotillomania), skin-picking, or nail-biting. The therapy involves increasing awareness of the habit, identifying triggers, and developing competing responses that are less harmful. HRT is effective in reducing compulsive behaviors, improving self-control, and restoring confidence. Often, it is used alongside other therapies to address conditions like obsessive-compulsive and related disorders.
Health Anxiety
Health anxiety, also known as illness anxiety disorder, is an excessive and persistent worry about having or developing a serious medical condition. Despite medical reassurance, individuals with health anxiety continue to fear illness, often misinterpreting normal bodily sensations as signs of disease. This condition can significantly disrupt daily life and cause emotional distress. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and gradual exposure techniques are effective in treating health anxiety.
Hypervigilance
Hypervigilance is a heightened state of alertness and constant scanning of the environment for potential threats. It is commonly associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety disorders, and trauma-related conditions. While it serves as a protective mechanism, hypervigilance can be exhausting, leading to difficulty sleeping, irritability, and difficulty concentrating. Therapy, grounding techniques, and relaxation strategies are often used to help individuals reduce hypervigilance and regain a sense of safety.
Hoarding Disorder
Hoarding disorder is a mental health condition characterized by the persistent difficulty in discarding possessions, regardless of their actual value. This leads to cluttered living spaces that compromise daily functioning, safety, and hygiene. Hoarding often causes distress to both the individual and their family members. The disorder is distinct from collecting, as it stems from emotional attachment, fear, or anxiety. Cognitive-behavioral therapy and structured interventions are common treatments.
Holistic Mental Health Care
Holistic mental health care is an integrative approach that addresses emotional, physical, social, and spiritual aspects of well-being. Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, it emphasizes lifestyle, nutrition, relationships, stress management, and mindfulness. This comprehensive approach promotes balance and long-term resilience, fostering overall mental and emotional wellness.

Through improved relational skills, clients gain stronger support systems, healthier coping strategies, and better emotional stability in their daily lives.
Insight-Oriented Therapy
Insight-oriented therapy emphasizes self-reflection and awareness of unconscious thoughts, feelings, and motivations. Rooted in psychodynamic principles, it helps individuals uncover patterns from their past that influence current behaviors and emotional struggles. By fostering deeper understanding, clients gain clarity about their triggers and conflicts, empowering them to make healthier choices. This approach is especially helpful for addressing long-standing issues, relationship difficulties, and complex emotional challenges that require exploration beyond surface-level symptoms.

By empowering parents, this therapy indirectly benefits children, promoting healthier family dynamics and stronger parent-child relationships.
Psychiatric Consultation:
A psychiatric consultation involves an in-depth evaluation by a qualified psychiatrist to understand an individual's mental health concerns. This process typically includes a review of medical history, symptoms, and lifestyle factors to diagnose conditions like depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder. Based on the assessment, the psychiatrist may suggest therapy, lifestyle changes, or medication. Psychiatric consultations are vital for accurate diagnosis, ongoing treatment planning, and helping individuals manage mental health conditions effectively.

Quick Stress Relief Techniques
Quick stress relief techniques refer to strategies and exercises designed to provide immediate reduction in mental tension and anxiety. Techniques include deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, guided visualization, mindfulness exercises, and grounding methods. These are particularly useful for individuals experiencing acute stress episodes, panic attacks, or high-pressure situations. While not a replacement for long-term therapy, quick stress relief techniques help stabilize mood, improve focus, and empower individuals to manage daily mental health challenges effectively.
Quarantine-Induced Mental Health Effects
Quarantine-induced mental health effects describe the psychological impact of isolation measures, such as anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, and feelings of loneliness. Mental health research highlights that prolonged social separation can affect emotional well-being, stress management, and coping mechanisms. Interventions like virtual therapy, structured routines, online support groups, and self-care practices are recommended to mitigate these effects. Awareness of these potential consequences helps clinicians and individuals adopt proactive strategies to maintain mental resilience during isolation.
Quenching Compulsive Behaviors
Quenching compulsive behaviors is a therapeutic approach aimed at reducing repetitive, intrusive actions often seen in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Techniques involve behavioral interventions such as exposure and response prevention (ERP), cognitive restructuring, and habit reversal training. The goal is to help individuals gain control over compulsions, reduce anxiety, and improve daily functioning. Mental health professionals combine quenching strategies with psychoeducation, mindfulness, and support systems to enhance long-term resilience and foster healthier coping mechanisms.
Qualitative Therapy Insights
Qualitative therapy insights refer to the non-numerical understanding gained from therapeutic sessions, interviews, or observations. These insights help clinicians explore patient experiences, emotions, and thought patterns deeply. Unlike quantitative measures, qualitative data focuses on narratives, perspectives, and context, allowing therapists to uncover underlying issues, triggers, and coping strategies. Incorporating these insights into treatment planning improves individualized care, strengthens therapist-patient rapport, and enhances overall mental health outcomes by addressing the human, subjective side of psychological well-being.
Quarantine Stress Monitoring
Quarantine stress monitoring is the ongoing assessment of mental health during periods of isolation or restricted movement. It focuses on tracking changes in mood, anxiety levels, sleep patterns, and social engagement. Tools may include self-report surveys, digital monitoring apps, or virtual therapy check-ins. Effective monitoring helps identify early signs of mental distress, guide timely interventions, and prevent chronic psychological issues. Instead of focusing only on problems, this approach helps individuals recognize coping tools, support systems, and personal skills they already possess. By highlighting resilience and adaptability, it nurtures confidence and fosters sustainable mental well-being. In the context of resilience building, resource-oriented therapy empowers individuals to rely on their unique capabilities and supportive environments to navigate difficulties and overcome trauma.
Relapse Prevention
Relapse prevention is a therapeutic approach that equips individuals with strategies to avoid returning to harmful thought patterns or behaviors, particularly after making progress in mental health recovery. It involves identifying triggers, developing coping mechanisms, and creating action plans for high-risk situations. As part of resilience building, relapse prevention strengthens long-term adaptability, reduces vulnerability to setbacks, and enhances self-efficacy. This ensures individuals can sustain positive mental health even when facing stress or adversity.
Reflective Practice
Reflective practice involves encouraging individuals to critically analyze their thoughts, behaviors, and emotional responses in different situations. Through guided self-reflection, people learn to recognize patterns, evaluate coping mechanisms, and identify areas for growth. This process builds resilience by enhancing self-awareness and emotional intelligence, helping individuals respond constructively to challenges. Therapists and educators often integrate reflective practice into youth programs, as it empowers individuals to transform setbacks into opportunities for personal and emotional development.
Reframing Therapy
Reframing therapy focuses on shifting the way individuals perceive stressful or negative experiences. By changing the perspective from “obstacle” to “opportunity for growth,” reframing reduces distress and promotes optimism. This approach is particularly powerful in resilience building, as it helps people reinterpret challenges in empowering ways. For example, failure may be reframed as a valuable learning experience. Such mindset shifts cultivate mental strength, adaptability, and hope, enabling individuals to navigate adversity with greater confidence.

Teletherapy refers to mental health care delivered remotely through phone calls, video conferencing, or digital platforms. It provides accessible support to individuals who cannot attend in-person sessions due to distance, time, or health barriers. Teletherapy ensures continuity of care and flexibility, while maintaining confidentiality and professional standards. Mpower integrates teletherapy as part of its holistic services, making psychological support more inclusive and convenient for people across different regions.
Therapeutic Alliance
The therapeutic alliance is the collaborative relationship between a therapist and client, built on trust, empathy, and mutual respect. It plays a crucial role in achieving positive treatment outcomes, regardless of the therapeutic approach used. A strong alliance encourages open communication, active participation, and emotional safety for clients, making them more likely to benefit from therapy. At Mpower, therapists prioritize fostering this supportive bond to enhance the effectiveness of mental health interventions.
Thought Reframing
Thought reframing is a cognitive-behavioral technique that helps individuals challenge and change negative or unhelpful thought patterns. By identifying distortions and replacing them with balanced, constructive perspectives, individuals can reduce anxiety, depression, and stress. This practice encourages self-awareness and resilience, empowering clients to manage daily challenges more effectively. Mpower therapists often use thought reframing as part of structured therapy sessions to promote healthier mental and emotional well-being.
Transitional Support Therapy
Transitional Support Therapy focuses on helping individuals cope with significant life changes, such as relocation, career shifts, parenthood, or retirement. These transitions can trigger stress, anxiety, or identity struggles, and supportive therapy provides coping tools to navigate the uncertainty. Through personalized interventions, clients gain emotional strength and adaptability. Mpower offers transitional support for individuals at different life stages, ensuring they feel guided, understood, and equipped to embrace new beginnings.
Tranquility Training
Tranquility Training is a therapeutic method that uses relaxation exercises, breathing techniques, and mindfulness practices to reduce stress and promote emotional calm. It is especially beneficial for individuals struggling with anxiety, sleep problems, or high-pressure lifestyles. The training equips people with simple, practical skills to achieve a state of inner peace. Mpower incorporates such relaxation-focused approaches to help clients restore balance and improve overall emotional well-being.
Trauma Processing Therapy
Trauma Processing Therapy is designed to help individuals safely confront and work through painful memories of traumatic experiences. Using evidence-based approaches such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) or CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), clients can reduce the emotional intensity of past trauma. This therapy emphasizes resilience, coping strategies, and emotional release. At Mpower, trauma processing is carefully guided by trained professionals to ensure healing in a secure and compassionate environment.
Twin Therapy
Twin Therapy focuses on the unique psychological dynamics between twins, addressing identity development, dependency, rivalry, or separation issues. It may involve joint sessions with both twins or individual sessions, depending on the needs. The goal is to foster healthy independence while maintaining supportive sibling bonds. Though relatively niche, such therapy can be transformative for twins experiencing interpersonal struggles. Mpower’s therapists use tailored interventions to strengthen sibling relationships and personal growth.
Transitional Object Therapy
Transitional Object Therapy uses comfort objects, such as a toy, blanket, or symbolic item, to help children manage separation anxiety or stressful situations. These objects provide emotional security and continuity, bridging the gap between dependence and independence. This form of therapy is especially effective for young children facing school transitions, hospitalization, or parental absence. Mpower applies such child-centric therapeutic techniques to ensure children feel safe, supported, and emotionally understood.
Therapeutic Storytelling
Therapeutic Storytelling is a creative therapy method where stories, metaphors, or narratives are used to help clients express feelings, process experiences, and build coping strategies. It is particularly effective with children and adolescents, as stories make complex emotions easier to understand and explore. This approach promotes healing by connecting imagination with real-life challenges. Mpower integrates storytelling in therapy to engage young clients, making mental health care approachable and effective.

U
Unipolar Depression
Unipolar depression, commonly referred to as major depressive disorder, is characterized by persistent sadness, loss of interest, fatigue, and feelings of hopelessness. Unlike bipolar disorder, it does not involve manic episodes. This condition can significantly impair daily functioning, work, and relationships. Biological, psychological, and environmental factors often contribute to its onset. Treatment usually involves psychotherapy, medications such as antidepressants, and lifestyle modifications. Early intervention and support can greatly improve outcomes and quality of life.
Uncertainty Intolerance
Uncertainty intolerance is a psychological trait where individuals struggle to cope with unknown or unpredictable situations. It is commonly linked to anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder. People with high intolerance to uncertainty often engage in excessive worrying, reassurance-seeking, or avoidance behaviors. This difficulty in accepting ambiguity can heighten stress and limit decision-making. Therapeutic interventions, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness, focus on developing tolerance for uncertainty and improving emotional resilience.
Unconditional Positive Regard
Unconditional positive regard is a concept from Carl Rogers’ humanistic psychology, emphasizing complete acceptance and support of a person regardless of their behavior or feelings. In therapy, it creates a safe, nonjudgmental environment where individuals can explore themselves honestly. This approach helps build self-worth, reduces shame, and encourages personal growth. By receiving genuine empathy and acceptance, clients can better align with their authentic selves. It is considered foundational in person-centered counseling and mental health care.
Unresolved Trauma
Unresolved trauma refers to psychological distress from past traumatic experiences that were never fully processed or integrated. Such trauma can resurface as flashbacks, emotional triggers, anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties. Often rooted in childhood neglect, abuse, or significant loss, unresolved trauma influences mental health even years later. Without proper intervention, it may lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or complex PTSD. Therapeutic techniques like EMDR, trauma-informed therapy, and somatic experiencing help individuals heal and regain balance.
Unhelpful Thinking Styles
Unhelpful thinking styles, often called cognitive distortions, are biased patterns of thought that negatively impact emotions and behavior. Common examples include catastrophizing, black-and-white thinking, overgeneralization, and mind-reading. These distortions contribute to anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem by reinforcing negative beliefs about oneself, others, or the world. Recognizing and challenging these patterns is a central goal in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Developing healthier, balanced perspectives helps individuals reduce stress, improve coping, and build emotional resilience.
Urge Surfing
Urge surfing is a mindfulness-based technique used in addiction recovery and behavior change. It involves observing and “riding out” cravings or impulses like waves, instead of immediately acting on them. The idea is that urges rise, peak, and eventually subside naturally. By practicing nonjudgmental awareness and detachment, individuals learn to manage cravings without relapse. This method is widely used in treatments for substance abuse, binge eating, and compulsive behaviors, empowering people to regain control and reduce harmful habits.
Unresolved Grief
Unresolved grief occurs when a person struggles to process the loss of a loved one or significant relationship, leaving emotions unacknowledged or suppressed. It can manifest as prolonged sadness, guilt, anger, or avoidance of reminders related to the loss. This type of grief may lead to depression, anxiety, or complicated grief disorder if left unaddressed. Supportive counseling, grief therapy, and group sessions help individuals process emotions, find meaning, and gradually adapt to life after loss.
Unusual Beliefs
Unusual beliefs are strongly held convictions that deviate from commonly accepted reality or cultural norms. In mental health contexts, these beliefs may occur in conditions like schizophrenia, delusional disorder, or severe mood disorders. Examples include paranoia, grandiose thinking, or fixed false beliefs. While not always harmful, such beliefs can interfere with daily functioning and relationships if extreme. Treatment often involves psychotherapy, antipsychotic medications, and psychoeducation to help individuals distinguish between reality-based and distorted thought patterns.
Upward Social Comparison
Upward social comparison occurs when individuals compare themselves to others they perceive as more successful, attractive, or capable. While sometimes motivating, it often leads to feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem, or anxiety. In the age of social media, upward comparisons are frequent and may distort perceptions of reality. Managing this involves fostering self-compassion, practicing gratitude, and focusing on personal growth. Therapists often encourage reframing comparisons to inspiration rather than competition to promote healthier mental wellbeing.

Virtual Reality Therapy
Virtual Reality Therapy uses immersive digital environments to help individuals confront and manage psychological challenges. By simulating real-life situations, this therapy is effective for treating phobias, PTSD, anxiety, and social skills training. Mpower can integrate VR-based interventions to provide a safe and controlled setting where clients gradually build resilience and coping strategies, bridging technology with therapeutic outcomes.
Values-Based Therapy
Values-Based Therapy emphasizes aligning one’s actions and decisions with deeply held personal values. It is often applied in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help individuals overcome anxiety, depression, or life stressors by focusing on what truly matters to them. At Mpower, such therapy can guide clients toward purposeful living, encouraging resilience, self-acceptance, and long-term fulfillment while supporting mental health recovery journeys.
Validation Therapy
Validation Therapy is often used in mental health care for older adults, especially those experiencing dementia or cognitive decline. Instead of challenging or correcting their perceptions, therapists validate feelings and emotions to reduce stress and enhance dignity. Mpower’s approach to validation therapy fosters empathy, trust, and comfort, ensuring individuals feel respected and understood, while maintaining emotional stability and meaningful connections with caregivers.
Vulnerability-Focused Therapy
Vulnerability-Focused Therapy helps individuals explore and accept their emotional vulnerabilities to build resilience and self-awareness. This approach encourages open acknowledgment of fears, insecurities, and emotional wounds, which can enhance coping skills and interpersonal relationships. Mpower integrates this therapy to create a safe space where clients can confront difficult emotions, reduce shame, and strengthen self-acceptance, leading to improved mental health and emotional regulation over time.
Virtual Peer Support
Virtual Peer Support connects individuals experiencing similar mental health challenges through online communities or group sessions. Facilitated by trained peer mentors, this approach encourages shared experiences, empathy, and mutual encouragement. Mpower leverages virtual peer support to reduce feelings of isolation, promote coping strategies, and foster a sense of belonging, ensuring clients can access emotional and social reinforcement alongside professional therapy in a safe, structured environment.
Virtual Mental Health Assessment
A virtual mental health assessment enables clinicians to evaluate an individual’s psychological state using online tools, questionnaires, and video consultations. This approach ensures the timely identification of conditions such as anxiety, depression, or stress-related disorders. Mpower’s virtual assessments prioritize accuracy, confidentiality, and accessibility, enabling early intervention, personalized care planning, and monitoring of progress while removing geographical and logistical barriers to mental health support.

Wellness Therapy:
Wellness therapy is a holistic approach to mental health that emphasizes the integration of physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being. It focuses on creating sustainable lifestyle habits, stress management, and coping strategies that enhance overall quality of life. Therapists in this domain guide individuals through practices like mindfulness, nutrition, exercise, and goal-setting to prevent mental health issues, improve resilience, and promote balanced daily functioning.
Worry Management:
Worry management refers to structured techniques and therapeutic interventions designed to reduce excessive anxiety and persistent negative thoughts. It helps individuals identify irrational fears, recognize cognitive distortions, and develop coping strategies to manage stress. Techniques such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and relaxation exercises are commonly used. Effective worry management improves mental clarity, emotional regulation, and overall life satisfaction by reducing constant mental tension and anticipatory stress.
Workplace Mental Health:
Workplace mental health focuses on promoting psychological well-being and preventing mental health issues within professional environments. It involves assessing stressors, improving organizational culture, and implementing supportive policies like flexible schedules, employee assistance programs, and mental health workshops. Prioritizing workplace mental health reduces burnout, enhances productivity, and fosters positive interpersonal relationships. Employers and employees alike benefit from a work environment that supports open dialogue, stress management, and mental wellness.
Withdrawal Symptoms (Mental Health Context):
Withdrawal symptoms are psychological and physiological reactions experienced when an individual stops or reduces the use of addictive substances or behaviors. Symptoms may include anxiety, irritability, depression, insomnia, and mood swings. Understanding withdrawal is crucial in mental health treatment and substance use therapy. Healthcare professionals provide structured detox programs, counseling, and coping strategies to minimize discomfort and prevent relapse, enabling individuals to safely regain emotional stability and functional daily living.
Wit Therapy (Humor Therapy):
Wit therapy, or humor therapy, utilizes humor and laughter as a therapeutic tool to improve mental well-being. Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, reduces stress hormones, and improves mood and social connection. Mental health professionals incorporate wit therapy in counseling sessions to help individuals cope with anxiety, depression, or trauma. By fostering a positive outlook, promoting relaxation, and enhancing resilience, this approach strengthens both emotional health and interpersonal relationships.

X
Xenophobia in Mental Health
Xenophobia refers to intense fear, distrust, or prejudice against people from other countries or cultures. In mental health, this can manifest as anxiety, social withdrawal, or aggression, and may contribute to depression or stress-related disorders. Therapists work with individuals to address underlying biases, enhance cultural empathy, and reduce the psychological impacts of fear or hostility toward others, promoting healthier social integration and emotional well-being.
X-Linked Mental Disorders
X-linked mental disorders are genetic conditions linked to the X chromosome that can affect cognitive, emotional, or behavioral development. Examples include Fragile X syndrome, which often causes intellectual disability and anxiety. Early diagnosis and intervention through therapy, educational support, and sometimes medication can improve social skills, learning ability, and overall quality of life for individuals affected by these disorders.
Xyrem Therapy
Xyrem (sodium oxybate) therapy is used in mental health treatment for conditions like narcolepsy with cataplexy and associated depressive symptoms. It helps regulate sleep cycles, improve daytime alertness, and reduce emotional disturbances linked to poor sleep. Careful medical supervision is essential due to potential side effects, and mental health professionals often integrate this therapy with counseling, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes for optimal outcomes.
Xenopsychology
Xenopsychology is a niche branch of psychology that studies human responses to unfamiliar, foreign, or ‘alien’ stimuli. This can include reactions to new environments, technology, or cultural experiences. Clinically, understanding these responses helps therapists manage anxiety, stress, and adaptation difficulties, and promotes resilience in individuals facing cross-cultural or highly novel situations, such as relocation, travel, or exposure to unfamiliar social norms.
Xanthopsia-Linked Anxiety
Xanthopsia is a rare visual distortion where everything appears yellow. While primarily a neurological or ophthalmologic condition, it can trigger anxiety, confusion, and emotional distress in affected individuals. Mental health professionals address the psychological consequences of living with this condition, helping individuals cope with visual distortions, manage associated fears, and prevent secondary stress or depressive symptoms through supportive therapy and cognitive strategies.
Xerostomia-Induced Psychological Effects
Xerostomia, or chronic dry mouth, is often a side effect of medications used for mental health conditions like antidepressants or antipsychotics. Beyond physical discomfort, it can lead to stress, irritability, and sleep disturbances. Mental health care integrates strategies to alleviate psychological impacts, enhance treatment adherence, and maintain overall emotional well-being, often in collaboration with dental and medical professionals.
Xenomnesia
Xenomnesia is a rare cognitive phenomenon where individuals experience false memories that feel like they originate from someone else’s life or perspective. In therapy, addressing xenomnesia involves helping clients differentiate between real and imagined experiences, reducing anxiety, confusion, and distress, and improving memory clarity. This is particularly relevant in trauma-focused or cognitive-behavioral interventions.
Xenobiotic-Induced Mood Disorders
Xenobiotics are chemical substances foreign to the body, including drugs or environmental toxins. Exposure can influence neurotransmitter systems and trigger mood disorders, anxiety, or cognitive dysfunction. Mental health interventions focus on identifying triggers, managing symptoms, and supporting recovery through therapy, lifestyle modification, and, when necessary, medication adjustments to reduce neuropsychological impacts.

Y
Yoga Therapy
Yoga therapy is a holistic approach to mental health that uses yoga practices—such as breathwork, meditation, and physical postures—to manage stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions. Unlike general yoga, it is tailored to individual psychological and physical needs. Research shows yoga therapy can improve emotional regulation, promote relaxation, and enhance overall well-being by balancing the mind-body connection. It is often used alongside traditional therapy for comprehensive mental care.
Young Adult Mental Health
Young adult mental health focuses on addressing psychological well-being in individuals aged 18–30, a critical developmental phase. Challenges may include anxiety, depression, identity formation, academic pressures, and social stressors. Early intervention and supportive counseling during this period can prevent long-term mental health issues. Approaches often combine cognitive behavioral strategies, psychoeducation, and peer support to help young adults develop resilience, healthy coping mechanisms, and emotional self-awareness.
Youth Counseling
Youth counseling is specialized therapeutic support for children and adolescents experiencing emotional, behavioral, or mental health challenges. It addresses issues such as stress, peer pressure, bullying, family conflicts, and anxiety. Counselors use age-appropriate techniques like play therapy, art therapy, or talk therapy to help young individuals express emotions, build coping skills, and develop resilience. Youth counseling promotes mental well-being early in life, reducing the likelihood of severe psychological problems in adulthood.
Yerkes-Dodson Law
The Yerkes-Dodson Law is a psychological principle that describes the relationship between stress/arousal and performance. It suggests that moderate levels of stress can enhance focus and efficiency, while too little or too much stress can impair performance. This law is important in mental health because understanding optimal arousal levels helps individuals manage anxiety, improve motivation, and prevent burnout. Therapists often apply it to guide clients in balancing stress for improved mental functioning.
Yoga Nidra
Yoga Nidra, also known as yogic sleep, is a guided meditation practice designed to induce deep relaxation and mental clarity. It helps reduce stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression by promoting conscious awareness while the body rests. Regular practice enhances emotional regulation, mindfulness, and restorative sleep. Mental health professionals may recommend Yoga Nidra as a complementary therapy for trauma recovery, stress management, and improving overall psychological resilience.
Yearning (Emotional)
In mental health contexts, yearning refers to an intense longing or emotional desire, often linked to attachment loss, grief, or unmet emotional needs. Persistent yearning can manifest as sadness, restlessness, or difficulty moving forward, impacting daily functioning. Therapy focuses on acknowledging these feelings, understanding their roots, and developing coping strategies. Emotional support, mindfulness, and grief counseling help individuals process yearning, gradually fostering acceptance and emotional resilience.
Youth Mental Health Awareness
Youth mental health awareness involves promoting understanding and reducing stigma around mental health issues among children and adolescents. Programs focus on educating young people, families, and educators about recognizing early signs of mental distress, seeking help, and practicing self-care. Awareness initiatives aim to empower youth to communicate openly about mental health, access professional support, and build coping mechanisms that support long-term emotional well-being and resilience.
Yin Therapy
Yin therapy is a complementary approach integrating principles of yin yoga, mindfulness, and relaxation techniques to enhance mental health. It targets the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting stress reduction, emotional balance, and mental calmness. By combining deep stretching, breath awareness, and meditation, yin therapy helps individuals manage anxiety, insomnia, and chronic stress. It is often used as a supportive therapy alongside conventional mental health treatments to improve overall psychological well-being.

Zoom Fatigue
Zoom fatigue refers to the mental and physical exhaustion resulting from excessive video conferencing, especially in work or educational settings. It is characterized by eye strain, headaches, and cognitive overload caused by prolonged focus on screens, constant self-monitoring, and a lack of natural social cues. This phenomenon has grown with remote work trends and highlights the need for regular breaks, screen-free periods, and mindfulness practices to maintain mental well-being and prevent chronic stress.
Zest for Life
Zest for life is a psychological term referring to an individual’s enthusiasm, energy, and engagement in daily activities. People with high zest demonstrate curiosity, motivation, and positive affect, contributing to better mental health and resilience. A strong sense of zest is associated with higher life satisfaction, better coping skills, and lower levels of depression and anxiety. Cultivating zest involves purposeful living, mindfulness, and participating in meaningful experiences that stimulate both personal growth and joy.
Zinc Deficiency and Mental Health
Zinc deficiency has been linked to various mental health challenges, including depression, anxiety, and impaired cognitive function. Zinc plays a crucial role in neurotransmitter regulation and immune system functioning, both of which influence brain health. Low levels of zinc can exacerbate mood disorders, reduce stress resilience, and affect memory and attention. Addressing zinc deficiency through diet or supplementation, under professional guidance, can improve mental well-being and complement therapeutic interventions for mood-related conditions.
Zeigarnik Effect
The Zeigarnik effect is a psychological phenomenon where people remember incomplete or interrupted tasks better than completed ones. It highlights how unfinished business can create mental tension and stress, which can impact focus and well-being. This effect is significant in understanding procrastination, anxiety, and cognitive load. Therapists may use awareness of this effect to help clients prioritize tasks, manage stress, and develop strategies to complete unfinished work, thereby improving mental clarity and emotional balance.
Zombie Thinking
Zombie thinking refers to repetitive, automatic, and unproductive thought patterns that contribute to mental distress, such as rumination or negative self-talk. These thoughts can create emotional numbness, cognitive fatigue, and reduced motivation, similar to “mental autopilot.” Awareness and intervention, such as mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral techniques, or journaling, can help individuals break these cycles. Addressing zombie thinking is crucial for improving mental health, fostering creativity, emotional regulation, and enhancing overall quality of life.
