Mental disorders are diagnosed by a symptom or set of symptoms. The person may have difficulty functioning in daily life, thinking, or taking action.

Having a mental health disorder makes it difficult to go about your daily life, professional activities, and social interactions. Although a number of physical symptoms do occur, these are often part of a mental illness and shouldn't be mistaken for ailments you are experiencing as a result of physical causes.

Irritability and insomnia are the most common physical symptoms of mental disorders. Increased anxiety and restlessness can lead to changes in appetite, such as weight loss or gain, and sleeping problems. Apathy and lethargy (extreme fatigue), stress and obsessive behaviours, unusual fears and phobias, hostility and rage, trembling hands and feet, blurry vision, fainting spells, difficulty swallowing, frequent infections, unusual smells or tastes, unexplained bruising or bleeding are also frequently observed.

There are many different kinds of mental illness, which affect people in a variety of different ways. Some mental disorders have a physical basis, and others don't. The physical symptoms for any type of mental disorder may be subjective or objective.

Anyone who has ever suffered from mental illness has experienced the distress of both mental and physical symptoms. So it is not surprising that often people seek treatment for these ailments separately, first seeking treatment of a physical disorder such as heart disease or diabetes, followed by a search for relief from their psychological distress.

Anxiety disorders cause physical symptoms. When people are anxious, the sympathetic nervous system is activated, causing a number of physical reactions. Physical symptoms occur during anxiety attacks or maybe present between episodes.

Approximately one in five people will experience some form of mental disorder in the course of a year. The disorders with the most debilitating symptoms include: schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).

In psychiatry, a mental disorder is a syndrome characterized by clinically significant disturbance in an individual's cognition, emotion regulation, or behaviour that reflects a difficulty in coping with environmental demands. This includes problems of not achieving goals, not managing emotions, as well as more specifically definable syndromes. Diagnostic criteria vary between different classification systems. Physical symptoms of mental disorders are often overlooked.

Physical symptoms of mental disorders mimic physical symptoms of physical disorders. A blood test, biopsy, or other medical intervention can resolve the mystery and make an unequivocal diagnosis. As with any disease, early detection leads to more successful therapy.

Psychosomatic illnesses (physical symptoms of mental disorders) have many similarities with mental illnesses. A psychosomatic illness may be less specific than a mental disorder, but it still gives insight into the psyche of a person. The symptoms are not imaginary – people who suffer from these illnesses experience real physical pain.

Mental illness is no different than a physical disease like cancer or heart disease in the way that it affects the body. Mental disorders can cause changes in how you feel, think, sense, and see the world around you.

The defining feature of a mental disorder is that it causes significant distress or impairment in an individual's everyday life. Other types of conditions can have symptoms that are very similar to those of a mental disorder, but will not necessarily cause any distress or impairment. For example, an eye disorder that produces blurry vision will not cause any distress to the sufferer, as they can simply wear spectacles.

While early warning signs of mental disorders are almost always behavioural, there are many physical symptoms associated with mental disorders. There are a number of physical symptoms that can occur in mental disorders – you may experience numbness or tingling in the arms and legs, problems with muscles, joints, and bones, digestion issues or have difficulty breathing. You must seek medical advice immediately if you suffer from any of these symptoms. Symptoms of mental disorders can include changes in eating habits or weight, sleeping patterns, low energy levels, and reduced interest in everyday activities.

Psychosomatic symptoms are physical or mental health problems that seem to come from emotional stress; however, they are actually caused by a physical problem in the body. Psychosomatic symptoms are medically unexplained physical symptoms that depend on the belief that they exist in order to fulfill a psychological purpose. The occurrence can be attributed to the body's emotional response to a specific stimulus.

Psychosomatic symptoms are physical symptoms not attributable to a general medical condition. Common psychosomatic symptoms include pain in regions of the body not directly related to any known injury, gastrointestinal problems such as irritable bowel syndrome and functional bladder disorders, skin problems such as dermatitis (eczema) and chronic urticaria (hives), and symptoms of physiological dysfunction in glands not associated with endocrine disorders. Persistent psychosomatic symptoms may be indicative of an underlying psychiatric disorder or somatization disorder.
