What is Depression:

Depression is a mood disorder, a group of conditions associated with the elevation or lowering of an individual's moods. It is a mental disorder that causes people to experience depressed moods, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, low energy, and poor concentration.

What is Learning Disabilities?

A learning disability is a neurological condition that affects the brain's ability to send, receive, and process information. A child with a learning disability may have difficulties in reading, writing, speaking, listening, understanding mathematical concepts, and general comprehension.

Types of different Learning Disabilities (L.D)

  • Dyslexia: Affecting ability to read, spell and write.
  • Dysgraphia: Affecting ability to write.
  • Dyscalculia: Affecting ability to carry out simple mathematical calculations.
  • Auditory processing disorder: Also known as central processing disorder, kids with this disorder can’t understand what they hear. This is because their ears and brains don’t fully co-ordinate.
  • Language processing disorder: Difficulty in expressing one’s self-using language, at times they also have difficulties in understanding spoken language. These kids may have difficulty in reading, writing, maths, understanding instructions and speaking.
  • Nonverbal learning disabilities: This is a learning difficulty that causes difficulty with motor, visual-spatial and social skills. Children with Non-verbal learning disabilities often can read, write and are well-spoken but struggle with subtle social cues and comprehension of abstract concepts.
  • Visual perceptual/visual motor deficit: This disability affects child’s ability to understand the information they visually see. These kids usually have a short attention span.

What effects Learning Disability has on children.

Learning disabilities are a frustrating part of life for any child or teen with a Learning Disability. They tend to experience shame, embarrassment, self-doubt, anxiety, frustration and self-isolation. Children who may not get the help which they require to cope with academics, often lead to years of struggle which may get extended into their adulthood, such experiences have psychological effects on children/teens which leads to negative self-image and low self-esteem. Due to these unpleasant experiences, they are prone to chronic depression also withdraw themselves or they become withdrawn, quit socializing as they perceive themselves as not fit/ different from others and isolate themselves. They tend to become quiet (go into their shell) or might become very aggressive and start acting out. Also many times these children/ teens experience bullying from neighbourhood or school, which affects them on a greater level emotionally.

A child's learning disability may result in emotional battering which might impact their everyday interactions with teachers and peers in school and with parents and siblings at home.

Research suggests that between 24% and 52% of children with learning disabilities also exhibit signs of behaviour problems. Learning Disability affects children/ teens emotionally and behaviourally equally.
Studies have shown that symptoms of depression may be 2 to 10 times more common in individuals with disabilities.

It has been seen in school setups especially that students tend to act out show unacceptable behaviour which diverts the attention of teachers or parents from academics. Also, such behaviours are easy escapes for them from studying as it takes them out of the situation,

Getting Help:

It is very important to spot the signs of behavioural problems these kids go through and to anticipate the relationship between learning disability and these behavioural problems. As if the Learning disability is causing any kind of behavioural problem or depression, working on learning disability treating it will eventually help in resolving depression.
